Ever since the Malaguti story broke I've had several EV Groups call in and ask about the situation since we still manage the parts for North America. The truth is there is a lot of value in the brand.
I was serious about my comments. If you want to make a fortune invest in a real world solution like a hybrid EV vehicle and invest in a company where you can get maximum returns thanks to government incentives to keep a factory open, the incentives are there if you're interested email me let's talk. I mean I am looking for serious players that want to change the face of EV.
You see all these US investors wanting to invest money in EV without a clue as to the motorcycle industry, the realities of it and they get sold on the idea by companies that are hiring former high paid executives from Harley that have no clue as to how EV, Scooters, or Motorcycle distribution works in 2011. They milk the investors for the money and sell them on the dream of selling a $10,000 EV bike. The truth is America doesn't want that. The EV market is going to grow and be developed by companies under the $5k mark. You try to sell $10k EV motorcycles and you will sell Zero bikes like Vectrix 1,0 did. You'll end up with $300,000 executives that put a lot of financed bikes in showrooms and leave the company depleted of money. Technology can be developed, but not at the expense of the company developing it.
That's why its so sad to see projects that had real world applications and real world pricing go down the drain. One hybrid in particular that should sell like crazy in the developing world never even went into production because Malaguti backed out of the project.
The electric hybrid developed by Ducati, Malaguti, and to be produced by CF MOTO never even had the chance to emerge into full scale production. This is really what the industry needs HYBRID Scooters and Motorcycles. In a country like the US outside of NYC a small displacement electric bike doesn't have much range or value. Consumers in Europe and America aren't looking for $10,000 or $80,000 Electric Superbikes. Those projects are just designed for investors to get involved, you milk the investment money, and then you end up with ZERO Motorcycle sales.
The real money comes from selling EV vehicles that are affordable. The next part is do they work? Can they offer Americans the range they need. That's why I love the Hybrid idea and why Ducati was behind it. The Malaguti / Ducati / CF project was a great idea and if the new group of offers actually gets organized it has a chance of success.
Let's see what happens it would be a shame for the people of Bologna to let another brand die because a few people hate the idea of having to change. The EV idea was killed at the worst possible time by Malaguti, right before gas prices went up again. It will take people of vision to make it a reality.
